297 + 193 Weeks

Arley was so naughty this week :(  His instant reaction to anything he doesn't like is to scream vehemently.  And it happens all day long, unless he is busy doing something he loves, like reading, painting, watching the iPad, or glued to my side.  I am starting to think he needs constant challenges and he's too smart for his own good.  This morning we made pancakes, and I asked him, "If Arley, Carmie and Mummy wanted a pancake each, how many would we need?"  Of course he said "Three".  Then I added Dad, and he said four.  I added Lolo and Dida, and he said six.  I added Aunty Georgia and  Zach and Baz, and he said nine, all without skipping a beat.  Then I added Bella and he said he was too tired.  I think he was just bored with me asking him such mundane questions!  Because he is naughty an exceptional amount of time, we are looking to getting him assessed to see if he has any sensory issues or anything.  I met with them today, and he will start his assessment at the end of next month.  I am really hoping they can give us some help!

This week we went to the swimming pool, we had my friend Jane over with her son Dusty for a playdate, we took Bella to Collers Beach for a runaround, and we had Carmie's friends Alice and Ness over for a tea party.  It was really nice for the girls to see each other again.  Arley was hard work, because he loves the girls too, but he just can't keep up, and was bugging them more than he was playing with them.  I took him to the park on his own to give them a break, but I felt so bad for him being rejected.  They did include him in their dress up time though, and allowed him to dance with them at their 'ball'.  One day when it seemed like it was going to be particularly warm (we thought it might just be the last beach day of the season), we took the kids out to Dolphin Point.  We set up the tent, relaxed for 15 minutes, then took the kids out for a paddle and a walk across the inlet. Poor little Arley promptly stepped on a bee and got stung.  He was so surprised by the sudden pain in his foot that wouldn't go away, it was so sad.  So, we packed up the tent and went home to watch movies with Arley and feed him ice cream until he felt better.

It rained for much of the week, and it looks like it's going to rain for much of next week too.  Thank goodness for raincoats and gumboots!

296 + 192 Weeks

We have had a rainy busy week.  Luckily the gumboots that I bought for the kids arrived in time for them to do some serious puddle-splashing.  One morning Arley woke me up and immediately asked if we could go outside.  So, I took him outside, and he was having a grand old time.  Then we got a visit from our new neighbour, a guy pushing eighty, and he told us all about how he used to splash in puddles, and how he used to spend all day playing in mud down at the creek.  He said to Arley, "Splashing in puddles is fun, isn't it?"  Arley screamed back, "NO!  IT ISN'T FUN!!"  That's my boy. The poor old man said he felt the rain starting and headed back in side, rather confused.

This weekend, the kids went to the farm for an overnight stay, and Jeff and I headed to Bungendore for my art opening.  It was a great day despite the bad weather - I sold four paintings and got two commissions (to add to the one I am working on at the moment).  And then we celebrated all night with good friends Xanthe, Beef and Ben.  It was a late night, with little sleep, and I was quite a zombie the next day, but it was all worth it.  Meanwhile, the kids had lots of fun with their grandparents and I'm sure, were spoilt rotten.

The weather has been really rainy, so we have been doing quite a few indoor things - painting, crafts, games.  On Monday while Carmie was at her Montessori day, I took Arley to a playgroup around the corner, and he loved it, making two new friends.  It is really good to see him interacting with other kids without Carmie around, because usually he just follows her everywhere.  It's definitely good for him.  On Wednesday we took the kids to Zippity Doo, the indoor play centre at Batemans Bay.  It was a complete madhouse there, truly a miserable place for any parent to be, but the kids had a blast. We stayed almost three hours, and had to force the kids to leave!  Today I took the kids to the story time and craft session at the library, which they always love.  Afterwards we went to a park so they could burn some energy, and then they begged to go see the little fossil gallery in town.  Arley wanted to pick up every single fossil, but they were really good there and at least let him touch them.

All in all, a good week :)

Arley has been keeping his maths skills secret from us.  He surprised us with this the other day:

I knew he was beginning to read though:

295 + 191 Weeks

So, little sweet angelic Carmie got me really good this week, with a doozy.  Here's what happened.  I was in the front yard gardening and the kids were playing in the cul-de-sac.  Carmie told me she wanted to go on an adventure and asked if she could walk down the hill to the bottom of our street (literally four houses away).  I said sure.  When she came back, she played for a little longer, then told me that wasn't much of an adventure.  I told her she could go across the road to the other side of the cul-de-sac to the vacant lot to explore and pick flowers (its just a 1000 square meter block of land that is going to be built on).  The only access is from the front opposite our house, unless you want to climb through two metres of bramble at the end of the lot, and it backs onto a road that leads to our neighbourhood park.  Arley then told me he was thirsty, so I walked up to our house to open the front door for him.  When I turned around, I saw a flash of colour through the brambles of the lot, and no Carmen anywhere.  So I ran over there and called for her.  Nothing.  I called some more.  Nothing.  I climbed through the brambles and started hollering her name.  Still nothing.  That's when the panic set in.  I started calling for her as loudly as I could.  I thought there was no way she couldn't hear me, and so of course I thought someone had taken her.  That's pretty much when the world started spinning.  I started back to the house, screaming out through the neighbourhood.  Arley came out of our house and I asked him if Carmie was there, he said no.  Jeff came out and asked where Carmie was, and to his horror I had to tell him that she was gone.  He started calling for her, and headed towards the neighbourhood park.  It's not like Carmie is ever disobedient, so of course I assumed she had gone to the lot, and then minutes later, disappeared.  I ran inside to find the phone, couldn't find it and instead had an asthma attack.  I found Jeff's phone and called the police.  I went outside and ran down the lawn, on the phone to emergency, when up the road trotted Carmen, followed by a neighbour in her car.  Apparently our lovely neighbour had jumped in her car and joined the hunt, and had found Carmie three blocks away (in a completely different direction), walking to our local swimming pool.  I fell to my knees, and Carmie asked me what is wrong and told me that she just wanted to get some exercise.  I had to send the neighbour in her car to go find Jeff who was still out searching for her.  It was honestly the worst seven or so minutes of my life.  The rising panic as time ticked on was unbelievable.  Jeff said he was walking through the neighbourhood thinking he was going to be one of those poor dads on tv with a missing daughter.  And do you know what Carmie said to me that night?  "Mum, did you learn a lesson today?"  I said, "ME learn a lesson?!?  What lesson is that?"  She said, "That I can go for a walk and come home and be OK!"  Five years old.  Such a scallywag!!

Apart from that drama, the week has been pretty good.  Arley is being a bit of a ratbag again, but honestly, what's new?  I just keep thinking that all will be well again when he turns four.  Four year olds can be reasoned with, right?  Is it a four year old's first impulse to scream, "NO!" whenever you ask him a question or to do something (or not do something, for that matter?)  Hopefully not!

We have found a lovely place to take the kids out with the dog - tons of rock pools and pretty safe.  I think our dog is going to permanently smell like the sea from now on.  We have had quite a bit of rain this week, so lots of home time (although I still can't find the time to get all the things done with the kids that I want).  On Tuesday night the kids had a sleepover at the farm with Lolo and Dida, so that Jeff and I could head up to Bungendore on Wednesday to hang my paintings for my show.  The exhibition is on for two months, and the opening is on Saturday, so the kids will get another sleep over, and we will actually get a night away!

Today we went to another homeschooler's house (it was definitely more like a beautiful farm) so that the kids could meet and have a play.  Arley was very into their chickens, and spent half the time chasing them around with a giant toy sponge rocket.  Carmie saw their kitten and now wants a kitten of her own (this is not a new wish, it just got amped up as of this afternoon).  I have my doubts that she will get one any time soon, as I don't think that Arley would be very nice to a cat.  We are lucky to have a very kind and patient dog for him to pick on!
