321 + 217 Weeks

I'm trying to remember all that we did this week...it all seems a bit of a blur.  We had a picnic at Narrawallee with the kids' friends Ness and Alex, and Willow and Finn, and their parents, of course.  Ness's mum Sarah brought their kayak, and 'borrowed' a canoe, so the kids had a blast paddling around the inlet.  I have wanted to take the kids out in a boat for the longest time, as Arley has been desperate to go in one, but I thought there would be no way he would sit still and enjoy it for long.  But I was so wrong!  We couldn't get him out!  He just wanted to cruise around all day floating on the water!  I want to get kayaks now so we can take the kids out, because he just loved it so much!  And it made him so calm!!  It was a lovely day, and the kids had fun together, and got very wet and sandy.  Somehow my kids haven't learned to not go into the water with all of their clothes on, shoes and all.  Again and again they do it, no matter how uncomfortable they get.  And then they have to spend all day wet, cold and itchy.  Or maybe it's me that has to learn, I should leave extra clothes in the car!

The kids spent Monday at their grandparents' while Jeff and I drove out to Bungendore to do some work and visit with our friend.  And we had lots of inside time this week.  We played tons of games - we are trying to help Arley with his poor winning and losing skills.  He is learning to lose with dignity as opposed to screaming at everyone in a 12 mile radius.  Slow but steady!  Today we went bowling with some friends from our homeschool crew, and he actually won the game (with the help of bumpers and ball ramp), so no dramas there.  Afterwards the kids' friends came over to our house for a play, and then we took the kids to an art opening, so it was a pretty full-on day.

Arley has had ups and downs this week.  We are plugging away at it, trying to be there when he needs us.  It's super hard though, but as my friend Deb said to me, he's making a warrior out of me :)

Here is a video from the snow that I forgot to add to last week's post:

320 + 216 Weeks

We have had a pretty full-on week!  We were supposed to have a picnic on Sunday with two other families, but our plans changed drastically.  On Saturday morning, I took the kids out to their friends Delphi and Jasper's house.  They love it out there, as Delphi and Jasper live on a big property and they always have baby chicks to pet and goats to feed, and lots of scrub to explore in.  While we were there, I received a message that Vanessa's family was pulling out of our picnic the next day, as there had been a snow fall in a town called Nimmitabel, and they had promised Ness that the next time it snowed, they would take her.  I thought it was a great idea, so I called Jeff, and the kids and I went home to pack.  We drove a few hours south that night and stayed the night in a beach house at Tathra (more than halfway to Nimmitabel).  The kids were great in the car, and they loved having a sleep over away from home.  The next morning we woke up and drove on to Nimmitabel.  No snow.  Ness's family were ahead of us, and they kept driving until they hit snow. We followed, but actually missed playing with them because we were quite far behind. However, after many hours in the car, we did reach the snow!  Carmie and Arley were so excited to see it for the first time!  Carmie climbed a little hill straight away, and was very happy.  Arley slipped and fell, and wasn't quite expecting the cold of the snow to hurt his hands, so he had a massive meltdown.  The kids started to sled (with our beach skimboards!), and Arley took a few tumbles off his sled and called it a day on sledding, until I went on with him and he loved it.  Carmie was a sledding champ, and couldn't get enough.  The kids had a snowball fight and made a cute little snowman.  It was really really fun.  And then we got back in the car for the long drive home!  We hit Canberra snow traffic on the way back, so we took this turnoff that looked hopeful, and it ended up being an hour and a half dirt road, so not the best choice, but at least we missed the traffic and got to see some very rural Australia!  We had no cell phone coverage, and no-one knew where we were, but we made it back safely :)  It was a whole lot of driving (and poor Jeffrey did it all!), but Carmie says it was the best day ever, and that she wishes she lived in the snow instead of at the beach!  Not her mother's daughter!!

We spent Monday at home recuperating from our hours in the car over the weekend.  We have started doing a family dinner night every Monday over at Lolo and Dida's, so we went there.  We really appreciate not having to cook one night a week!  On Tuesday we hung out with our homeschool crew.  We met them at the fig tree park in Milton.  The kids went crazy for the horses there - they are just so friendly, next time we have to remember to bring them carrots.  After that we all drove out to Cunjarong Point so we could go to Green Island.  First though, the kids did a show and tell, because they wanted to have the show and tell experience (so cute!).  Then we walked down the beach and across the rocks to the island.  It was SO awesome!  Our friend Deb had brought her mountain man/marine biologist friend to give us a marine biology rock pool lesson.  It was really great, and we can't wait to do this more often (if Dave is willing that is, Deb!)  The rock pools there were untouched, so there were some really amazing creatures to discover, and Dave was full of info.  We also found an aboriginal midden (so cool!), and the kids built a small fire on the beach.  It was such a great day full of fun, friends and learning, and it really helps that the other parents look out for my kids too, because it makes Arley seem like less of a handful.  So thanks for that guys!

Wednesday was spent doing Arley's therapy sessions, and Carmie went to Lolo's for the day.  In the afternoon, our neighbour Gemma came over for a play.  Arley is the coolest cat when she is around - you would never know that he behaves any differently.  They adore each other, and Arley was very cross when she had to go home.  Today we spent at home, the kids having some activity time while I cleaned. Arley has had two pretty good days in a row.  We did lots of sensory play with him this morning, and it seems to have put him in a good place.  He likes to lie between couch cushions and pretend he is a hotdog.  Whatever works!!

319 + 215 Weeks

Well, we have had a super rough week as far as Arley is concerned.  He has had one to three meltdowns every day, and it has been hard for all of us, least of all him.  On a good note though, he is learning to share, and to take turns, and for the first time tonight we were able to play a game and he didn't have a breakdown when he lost (which is massive for him!).  So he is definitely making progress in some areas, which we are very thankful for.

We were supposed to have a picnic with friends on Sunday, but Carmie came down with a mild cold, and we weren't sure how bad she was going to get, so we postponed the picnic until this weekend.  We did get up to a whole lot of other stuff this week though, although I think the kids only got out of their pyjamas one day!  Looking back at the photos, I even see that I took them to the park in their pyjamas.  Doh!  They also rode bikes, helped me bake cupcakes, and on Monday we went down to Dolphin Point.  It was extraordinarily beautiful there, and we pretty much had the whole place to ourselves.  We went for a long walk around the inlet to the rock pools, and they couldn't believe the size of the waves crashing against the rocks.  It was a lovely day.

It has been windy ever since Tuesday, so we have been inside a lot.  After Arley's OT on Wednesday, we couldn't go to the park because of the wind and rain, so we went to the Nowra Library, and the kids made me overjoyed by asking to go to the regional art gallery that is next to the library.  I couldn't believe my luck!  It was their first view of a gallery other than mine, and Carmie wanted to know why my paintings weren't in there :).  After we got home, I took the kids over to Carmie's friend Vanessa's house, as  they have really cool Thomas the Tank tracks and trains, and Arley has been simply desperate to go over there, like asking me every day, several times, for weeks. We have been fighting over it, because I didn't think it was right that I invited Carmie's little brother over to Vanessa's house to play with Ness's big brother's old train sets!  But in the end I caved, and off we went, and Arley got his fix.  It was a nice afternoon, and Arley had such good manners and even left without putting up a fight (it helped that he left with a bag of trains and tracks to play with until next time - thanks Sarah!).

Today the incessant wind had us holed up in the house again, but we didn't mind so much.  We played games, read books, I got some overdue chores done, and Carmie actually spent five minutes doing a handwriting book, with a great deal of complaining!  Arley played trains as usual, and Carmie read a bunch of books.  Last night I was forced to hand my Kindle over to Carmie, as she has read most of our books, and I can't find any at the Ulladulla library that she hasn't read or is interested in.  I put an Isla Fisher book on it, and when I got up this morning, she had already finished it.  She is going to read us out of house and home!!
