So, now Arley is on antibiotics, for ten days. I took him to the doctor on Friday to confirm that he had tonsillitis, and the doctor gave me a prescription. We spent a bit of time downtown afterwards and had a play, and Arley spat his first dose of antibiotics all over the floor of the arcade, twice. Getting the medicine into him was a nightmare, and the third attempt was the worst. After an hour and a half of a full blown screaming tantrum with Arley spitting out his medicine (and me offering every bribe in the book, including whatever Thomas train he wanted), I finally called the health hotline and the nurse gave me some ideas. It seems he will drink his antibiotics if they are mixed with apple juice, and it only takes 20 minutes (!) so that is what we have been doing. He has had a couple of bad nights - one was terrible. He woke up at around 11:30 and was crying and flopping around like a fish. He told me he was sick, and he wouldn't let me leave. After 15 minutes he vomited all over his bed, so I put him in our bed with us, and then had to go clean up the mess. Then at 12:30am he vomited all over our bed. So Jeff went to sleep on the couch and I had to change our sheets. He fell asleep again but woke up wretching and flopping around again at about 3am. Then at 6am he woke up crying and screaming that it was too bright in our room, and he sat up and promptly got a gushing bloody nose, all over my freshly changed sheets and duvet. Worst night ever. But he is doing much better now, but is still a little terror!
We took the kids to Funland on Saturday, and then out for ice cream. They had tons of fun, and we gritted our teeth through it all :) On Sunday I was in the gallery, so Jeff took the kids to a park at Narrawallee. On Monday it was Halloween. Carmie has been counting down the days to Halloween since mid October, so I was happy when it finally arrived. Both of the kids dressed as fairies, and they were too cute. Trick or treating is kind of a pathetic event here in Australia, as few people actually open their doors to the kids. We gave out candy when we got home, and Carmie was so grown up, meeting the kids on our front patio and doling out lollies to them. Next year she wants us to stay home and decorate our house and try to scare the trick or treaters. Arley insisted on watching Halloween videos the next day, and then was too scared to go to bed that night, and cried for a good half hour. He keeps begging to watch them again, so I have told him that they only show Halloween videos on Halloween and he'll have to wait another year.
Next week we are doing a trial homeschooling run, and the kids are staying home for the week. Next year we will be homeschooling Carmie and sending her to a Montessori co-op a few days a week, and we are not sure on Arley at the moment. We figured we'd better give the whole thing a go. I think the kids will thrive, I just have to figure out a way to get my painting done too, but I have a plan, so we are putting it to the test. Carmie is so far ahead in her reading and maths, I can't fathom sending her to mainstream school and having her be bored. She is reading chapter books on her own at night time, and has started reading in her head instead of out loud. And she doesn't want to go to school. We have a pretty solid homeschool community around here, so we are going to utilise that and do some free-range learning with the kids. Fingers crossed I can hold on to my sanity!
